Emerging from classic feature photography, Stefan Pielow is renowned for his distinctively arranged portraits for magazines, companies and advertising agencies.
He received his degree in communication design and photography from the Folkwangschule in Essen, Germany. His first photographic features appeared in the ZEITmagazin; shortly after he was commissioned by the STERN. A collaboration so successful, it let to many years of free-lance work with them. While travelling the world doing editorial and portrait photography, Stefan Pielow has worked with countless celebrities, politicians and CEOs. He has photographed actors and musicians and gained deep insights into the life of the German aristocracy by doing homestories for GALA. For the Deutscher Gründerpreis, one of the most prestigious awards for outstanding entrepreneurship in Germany granted by the partners STERN, ZDF and PORSCHE, Stefan Pielow portrayed the winners of the ‘start-up’ category from 1998 through 2008, using a unique visual concept explicitly developed for the occasion. MARE, the German magazine dedicated to the subject of the Oceans, commissioned him for venturesome trips to the North Pole and the Bahamas, and it was also MARE who published his first coffee-table book “New York” in 2011. In 2014, the photo book “Art Scene Berlin” has been released, which features Stefan`s beautifully arranged portraits of twenty different Berlin artists (BJV Verlag). In co-operation with mare, Stefan just published the TUI Cruises book: „Mein Schiff 5“ entsteht" ( building of my ship ). It tells the story of a cruise liner construction, starting with the first steel cut and ending with the sea trial.
Alongside, Stefan Pielow also does editing work and is publisher for photographic books.
In 2002 he left Hamburg for the south of Germany. He now lives in Starnberg near Munich with his wife and two daughters.
